Meet Our Newest ACTION Team Members!
Katie Flaspohler joined the ACTION team in September as a Program Management Coordinator.
A message from Katie: CCHMC has always been on my *bucket list* of places to work. I graduated from the University of Dayton with a degree in Early Childhood Education, but I realized after two years of substitute teaching, that teaching was maybe not for me. I knew I still wanted to work in a place where learning/education were valued, so I took a position at the Cincinnati Zoo helping to plan corporate and social events. Most recently, I was with the American Heart Association supporting the Heart Mini and Cycle Nation campaigns. This feels like a natural landing place coming from the AHA for a few
reasons. Many of the families I knew through my time at the AHA were either current or former patients here and spoke so highly of their experience. Additionally, I had a college friend who had a heart transplant and had a VAD while he awaited his transplant. He passed about 6 years post-transplant, but the extra years he received, were incredible to witness. I am so passionate about the work being done here, and am excited to join the team and meet everyone. 🙂 A few fun’ish things about me:
I live on the Westside, have a husband and a dog, and I like to read, work out (any Orangetheory fans?!) and spend time outside!
Anaam Alzubi joined the ACTION team in August as the newest Sr. Data Analyst.
Why did you want to join ACTION?
The idea of working towards improving care for patients and their families was inspiring. I wanted to be part of this mission and learn from the community by using data science and machine learning methodologies. ACTION had the resources, support, and passion I would need to accomplish that. What’s your favorite part about ACTION?
I supported ACTION the moment I joined Cincinnati Children’s along with other learning networks, and I felt I belong ever since. I love how everyone is like a family, along with the focused mission, and the true teamwork. What are some things that you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love taking my kids out and doing activities together.
Carlos Bonilla Ramirez joined the ACTION team in August as a Research Fellow.
What is role at ACTION?
I am a research associate. Why did you want to join ACTION?
I want to pursue a career in Pediatric Heart Surgery, and ACTION is an example of applying innovation and collaboration to improve patient outcomes. What are some things that you enjoy doing outside of work?
I like playing guitar and reading short stories.

Quality Improvement Updates
Aggregate network stroke data, updated September 2022. We sustained our initial efforts, see graphs below. New interventions coming soon.
Percent of patients who had a stroke with all devices (by first implant date)
Percent of patients who had a stroke with intracorporeal continuous flow device (by first implant date)
Percent of patients who had a stroke with paracorporeal continuous flow device (by first implant date)
Percent of patients who had a stroke with paracorporeal pulsatile flow devices (by first implant date)
57 HeartMate 3TM and Berlin Heart patients have been entered in the De-Escalation Project. 30 of the 57 patients achieved de-escalation before either 1. activation for transplant, 2. completing hospital course to discharge, or 3. receiving their transplant. Achieving de-escalation means the patient was extubated, off inotropes, ambulating or age equivalent, and stated feeds. This project is designed to encourage patient stability prior to transplant. It is also an effort to encourage discharge of patients on HeartMate 3TM.
