Dear Community, It was great to see many of you at ISHLT this month! Congratulations to the many authors and co-authors involved in the ACTION abstracts shared at ISHLT (details below). We had over 100 members at the ACTION meeting who worked together to align Adverse Event definitions and learn about our new initiative—ACTION Global. The launch of ACTION Global is an expanded effort to involve more international sites with an end goal of improving patient outcomes globally by sharing data and practices around the world. We are already excited and planning for the
Fall 2023 ACTION Meeting at the International Pediatric VAD and Heart Failure Summit in September. See more summit info below and stay tuned for meeting details in upcoming Forecast emails. Thank you for your continued efforts! Regards,

Excellent outcomes, for our patients and families, remains the cornerstone of ACTION. By bidirectional sharing of experiences across the globe, we will bring new knowledge and therapies to the bedside, standardize processes to decrease unnecessary variation, change the culture to ensure engagement and prioritize resources to improve the outcomes that matter most to our patient and families. ACTION’s first step is to connect with interested sites around the world to learn about their current infrastructure and practices to optimize how we learn and share with each other. Do you know international providers or sites that may be interested in participating? Do you have ideas for how
ACTION can best expand globally? Email us: info@actionlearningnetwork.org
Quality Improvement Updates
Aggregate network stroke data, updated April 5, 2023.
We sustained our initial efforts, see graphs below. The leaders are working on a High-Risk bundle intervention that will be rolling out for testing soon!
Percent of patients who had a stroke with all devices (by first implant date)
Percent of patients who had a stroke with intracorporeal continuous flow device (by first implant date)
Percent of patients who had a stroke with paracorporeal continuous flow device (by first implant date)
Percent of patients who had a stroke with paracorporeal pulsatile flow devices (by first implant date)
88 HeartMate 3TM and Berlin Heart patients have been entered in the De-Escalation Project. 54 of the 88 patients achieved de-escalation before either 1. activation for transplant, 2. completing hospital course to discharge, or 3. receiving their transplant. Achieving de-escalation means the patient was extubated, off inotropes, ambulating or age equivalent, and stated feeds. This project is designed to encourage patient stability prior to transplant. It is also an effort to encourage discharge of patients on HeartMate 3TM.
Patients and parents told us how they’re feeling post-VAD implant.
167 surveys were completed from 6/8/21 through 3/31/23.
See the Visual Analog Scale results below.
